Brother DCP-1610W A4 Mono Multifunction Laser Printer – Excellent Printer

Very capable black and white wifi printer. . So far so good, works well and easy to connect to via wifi. Only black and white but a lot cheaper to run than colour printer.

Great little printer and copier. Super value and works well, easy to set up and much better than my old inkjet which was always drying up. The only comment i have is that it wrinkles the paper even with higher quality gsm.

Prints fast and cheep compered to over laser printers. Connected over wifi with ease. Scanning and copying functions included. Also comes with sum starter toner. Price to performance is the best iv come across so 5*.

  • An end to frustration and wasted ink cartridges.
  • I’m sure the printer is great, but network setup is an absolute nightmare
  • Excellent monotone laser printer and a step up from troublesome and expensive inkjets

Easy to use, but noisier than expected.

Had this for a year and a half, used only for simple b&w documents but it has never let me down. Which is not what can be said for all the other printers i’ve ever owned. Would buy this again without hesitation.

Works with linux mint / ubuntu but. Works with linux mint / ubuntu but you need to download the linux deb driver installer from the brother website. Unfortunately the installation instructions on the brother site are outdated for linux mint 18 and ubuntu 16. However, the instructions on this site worked fine: (website link blocked by amazon *)it takes around ten minutes to install the scanner and printer drivers, copy/pasting around 8 commands into terminal from the site linked above. The brother printer and scanner now works fine. Only dropped one star due to brother not keeping the linux installation file and documentation up to date, necessitating following the instructions on a third party website. * i had to remove the link as amazon wouldn’t post my review with a link in it. Good luck to anyone else buying this printer, hope you can find the instructions on how to install it.

Initial feedback = ‘great printer’. I wanted a simple printer for home, but found far too much choice. And for every printer the had 100+ ‘5 or 4 star’ reviews, it would also have 10s of ‘1 or 2 star’ reviews as well. What became clear me, and helped me select this printer (and might help you) was the following:1. ‘laser’ is far better quality (used on office printers) and far less susceptible to ‘ink problems’ than ‘ink jet’;2. Many ‘good value printers are a con as they either come with a cartridge that gives you 10 prints, or ties you in to cartridge replacement contracts, or automated replacement. I want be in control and know when my cartridge is. I only want to print letters & forms, and not photos, so colour printing is not important, and helps reduce complexity and ink costs;4. I wanted wireless to use with my mac, but use with mobile devices was not a priority;5.

  1. Office quality printer for a good price. I bought this as a home use for printing personal documents and emergency printing at home, averaging maybe a few pages a week. The main reason for going laser is because the cartridges last longer. I am also using a multi-layered shelf at home so having a printer/scanner in a single device helps me save shelf space. Printing quality of this printer was great — comparable with those larger printers that are used in office. But compared to most other home printers, the brother dcp-1610w isn’t small either. When i was buying the printer i didn’t consider wireless as an important functionality as i used to have bad experience with wireless other printers i had in the past. But technology has changed and the wireless on this printer is fast and stable. Now i find wireless printing a big plus that keeps my room tidy.

Apart from entering wifi details and adding paper, nothing else needs to be done. The scanner works flawlessly and both printing and scanning are fast enough for casual home use.

It says in the user guide to use 80gsm paper well using that leaves roller indents on both the left and right side of the paper. I honestly thought a laser printer was quiet, this is rather noisy it makes a racket to be honest, it says in the user guide to use 80gsm paper well using that leaves roller indents on both the left and right side of the paper using 100gsm is a little better but not a lot, i would have returned the printer but this is the second one i have had after returning the first one for those reasons i have mentioned. On reflection i wish i had kept the first one as it made a racket but not as much as this one. On the whole i am disappointed with the printer considering its a brother.

Fast printing – crap instructions. Reasonably easy to set up and prints very fast, obviously only in black and white. One of the most irritating things is that if you have it placed on your worktop you can’t see the display prompts in a little window and have to get up and look down on it. Visibility of the display prompts is very bad. There was no instruction booklet with it (although loads of other bumph) and i had difficulty even figuring out what model i had (dcp=1610w) as the name is not on the front or sides of the printer. I am currently trying to find a manual online, but so far no luck.

    1. Has done its job for over a year so far. Has done its job for over a year so far with no issues. Only downside is the open paper tray which allows dust to collect on the paper. Printing on dusty paper can transfer the dust to the drum and leave marks on future printing until the drum is cleaned. So care is needed if leaving the printer unused for a while.

  9. Good lower end laser printer with software quirks. When i bought it for £65 on amazon end of 2016. Works ink efficiently (still on my first smaller cartridge which came with it). I had some set-up problems with the wifi too as mentioned in previous reviews. So that was not so quite straight forward and the instructions were not very helpful either. Fortunately, an update of the driver sorted it for me eventually too.

Can be tricky to get out of deep sleep sometimes. Not sure why people keep weeping about the footprint.

      1. Connected up to 2 pcs very easily and printed first time i tried it. Good value for money, seems reasonably sturdy, although the brittle plastic fixings are a slight cause for concern whenever you raise and lower the lid – there is always a moment when the mechanism sticks and you wonder whether it will bend or break.

Good print quality, poor documentation. I am very pleased with the print quality even on economy settings. It is rather let down by the small lcd screen which can be very difficult to read. The manual, when i was able to locate it online was opaque and unhelpful. However, i did not have any problem with setting up the wifi as some others have experienced.
