Brother HL5240 High Performance Laser Printer – Noisy, but decent

Inkjet printers are far too expensive to maintain. Most companies are charging far too much for ink cartridges which don’t cost much too make, so i gave up and bought this. It isn’t small, it isn’t quiet, but it’s a good printer. The quality is good, and it doesn’t jam or have any faults. The only bad things are the small memory in which it can take some documents longer to print. It also didn’t install properly on my imac because apple don’t have the proper drivers for it. This made it quite hard to set up. Apart from that, it’s pretty good.

Compact, speedy monochrome printer. I bought this printer during a ‘heyday’ for amazon-purchasing brother users: at a time when the manufacturer sold factory refurbished units at incredibly low prices directly through amazon. I paid about the same for my printer (plus a toner cartridge) as the toner cartridges cost individually at my local stationers. Several years on, and i’m still not regretting the decision. I use this as a personal printer with some enforced work applications (both academic and job-related). The printer allows monochrome printout from wired access only. It suits my academic needs admirably and makes me think twice about other uses: if i really want colour, i have to shift to another computer to gain access. The printer is quick and low maintenance, and shopping around provides branded toner at good prices.

  • Compact, speedy monochrome printer
  • Compact and reliable
  • Noisy, but decent

I’ve owned and used this printer for quite some time now and it has been very reliable. It was easy to install and, once one sorts out the formula, prints both sides fairly easily too, but there is some slight paper curl. I am not a heavy user – perhaps only a bit over1000 sheets a year – but my first toner cartridge lasted almost three years and printed cleanly with no smudging right to the end. The new cartridge was easy to fit. The pros of this printer are;easy to installcompact sizeeasy to usereliablethe cons arewhen printing more than about 10 sheets, the paper tends to curl and spill off the machinedoes use some power on standby – worth switching off at nightthe feed for thicker card is a little cumbersomemanual ‘duplex’ takes some working outall in all, i like this printer and recommend it.

I needed a simple b&w printer to connect with a timing system used for timing racing pigeons, competing in races. The timing device needed a 25 pin socket on the printer, most new printers only have usb.

      1. Although i am generally happy with the performance of this product i cannot believe the noise level it generates when printing. I upgraded from an hl1030 which i have had for 6 trouble free years, hence the reason for opting for another brother machine. However the hl1030 was much quieter than the hl5240 which is referred to constantly as an ‘iron lung’. If silence is golden do not buy the hl5240.
