Brother Mono Laser Printer : Excellent Value Printer

The printer just works straight out of the box and gives very good fast results. It’s small and fits where my old laserjet 4l went. Manual duplexing works but is tedious if doing more than one copy: you have to turn the paper over for each page of each copy rather than doing all copies one way and then turning the paper over to do the other side for all.

I wanted a good quality and inexpensive laser printer with reasonable cost/page and this is what i got. The print quality and speed are excellent – couldn’t ask for better at the price. Also the printer can be set to automatically go into ‘sleep mode’ after an interval when it is not in use – it then spends about 5 seconds ‘waking up’ for the next print job and then stays ‘awake’ for a configurable period before ‘sleeping’ again. In ‘sleep’ mode the printer is very quite. The only regret is that i didn’t purchase the duplex printing version, although it is nearly twice the price. However, the brother printer drivers do make manual duplex printing straightforward but of course you need to pass the paper through the printer twice – face-up and the right way round illustrated by on screen diagrams – even works for booklet printing. Also the single-sheet manual feed slot for special papers is a little awkward to use but reliable.

This is a simple, mono laser printer that has one great asset: network connectivity. It may not be wireless but it is great value with low running costs – low enough to actually purchase toner & drum rather than a whole new printer when the time comes. Here are the specifications for the Brother Mono Laser Printer:

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • Up to 22ppm mono printing speed
  • First print in under 10 seconds
  • Up to 2400 x 600dpi
  • 181 MHz processor
  • 16MB memory

It was easy to set up and it works. It’s on a home network with a mix of pcs and macs, and both sorts of computer can talk to it. It’s a little noisy, and it goes on a bit after it’s printed, but it’s not a problem.

Simple to use, but efficient. The packaging gives good protection. Putting in the ink is very easy. Unlike some laser printers, nothing spills out, so no major cleaning – in fact no cleaning at all. I’ve seen experts spend ages connecting a printer to a network. With this one, you just follow very simple instructions, and it works first time. The print quality is excellent, as is the speed. There is some noise, but not enough to bother me. Unless you have a lot of need to print on both sides of the paper, this printer is about as good as you will get.
