Having used inkjets for years and spent £100’s on refills i decided to give lazerjets a go. Having reviewed cheap and cheerful mono lazerjets i opted for the p1006. Unit well packed, possibly too well packed. Initial removal of the toner cartridge to get at the packaging was a bit worrying. It took more force than expected (i worry over the strength of plastic components). However once removed it reinstalled very easily. Works fine on my evesham desktop running xppro and on my apple macbook running mac osx.
When i bought a new pc which had windows vista installed i found that my trusty hewlett-packard laserjet 1010 printer was no longer compatible, and so i had to upgrade. I chose this one over the 1005 purely because of the increased memory installed – that aside they both looked very similar indeed. Inside the box you’ll find a driver disk, the printer, its power lead, and a demo toner cartridge which will produce half the number of pages that a ‘proper’ cartridge would, but it is enough to get you started – i’ve had mine for a couple of months now, print at least 15 pages per week (291 pages all told according to the driver) and it still shows no signs of needing replacement. Note that the box doesn’t contain a usb2 cable, so if you don’t already have one do ensure that you order one. The printer itself is a tidy looking piece of kit. On the front is a flap which opens to reveal the two paper trays, and a power button (much better than my 1010, where the button was on the back. ) the top has an extendable flap which will hold printed pages, and also opens up to reveal the cartridge inside, the fitting of which takes maybe five seconds, and there is also a button which can be used to cancel jobs etc. Along with two led lights which indicate the printer status. That’s it – no displays, no keypads.
A good, trouble free printer. No problems in use or installation. Print quality is more than acceptable, even on really cheap paper. Also nice and small so it doesn’t get in the way when not in use.
- A good little printer
- A great little printer
- Great and easy to use
Received this printer from amazon a couple of weeks ago, and i have to say this printer is well worth the money. This printer is used on the windows vista platform so i cannot comment on how it runs on mac, but with vista it took only 5 minutes to setup, its so easy to setup and having used inkjet for years i am so suprised at how unbelievebly fast it prints. It does only print in mono, however i use my computer only for personal use in the house and if i want any pictures printed i get them developed in the supermarket where the quality is a lot better than with an inkjet and cheaper. With the laserjet printer i don’t have to worry about the inkjet ink drying up if i don’t use it that often as i did with the black ink on many occasions and in the long term it will work out a lot cheaper than an inkjet. If you are thinking of a laser printer i have to recommend this one its brilliant quality and will workout cheaper longterm than the inkjet.
Got this as my last inkejet was not compatible with vista. I wanted something to print my coursework out and the problem with inkjets is that they dry up if not used for a while. As i’ve had laserjet’s at home and work since the veritable laserjet 4 i knew that a hp laserjet would fit the bill. After looking at some specs i settled on the p1006. The printer came well packed with hp’s orange shipping inserts and easy instructions to follow. I was up and running in ten minutes printing via usb from vista ultimate. I used cheap photocopy paper and premium thick paper and, as always, the output was quality and sharp. Switching to eco mode lightened the text a little but was satisfactory. Replacement toners cost about the same as the printer but i worked out i’ll need one every 2 years and don’t forget that changing a toner cartridge gives you a new toner transfer roller as well so maintaining the quality output.

Excellent value, quick and high quality, only minor gripe is that the paper doesn’t feed through very well when you get to the last few pages in the stack. Otherswise so far no problems.
